Countdown to Race Day – 2-3 Weeks Out

By guest blogger, Tobi Tungl. So, you’ve signed up for Michigan Coast to Coast. You’ve been training for months, crushing long rides, dialing in your gear, and now it’s go time. With just weeks to go until race day, you might be wondering, “What else do I need to do to make sure I actually survive 100 or 200 miles of gravel?” Well, you’ve come to the right place.

After years of tackling C2C, from my fatbike days in 2018 to rolling on a gravel rig now, I’ve made all the mistakes so you don’t have to. I’ve learned the hard way how to prep like a pro…or at least look like one. Let’s break it down so you can roll up to the start line confident, calm and ready to crush it.

Fuel the Engine

Your body is your engine and let me tell you, C2C is not the time to run out of gas. In the weeks leading up to the race, dial in your nutrition. Stick to foods that fuel you well during long rides. If you’ve been experimenting with gels, chews, or drink mixes, now’s the time to decide what works best. Your stomach is not the place to test new ideas on race day…trust me. If not, bring an extra roll of TP with you on race day (IYKYK).

During the race, aim to eat something every 30-45 minutes, whether it’s a gel, bar, or my personal favorite, an almond butter sandwich. Don’t forget electrolytes. Water alone won’t cut it for 100 or 200 miles and the last thing you want is to bonk halfway through because you didn’t replace what you were sweating out. Everyone is unique and you should see what works best for you. Plan ahead, pack smart and make sure your crew knows what you need at every stop.

Tapering

Tapering might feel weird, especially if you’re used to logging big miles every week, but trust the process. In the two weeks before the race, gradually reduce your volume while keeping some intensity in your rides. Think shorter rides with a few bursts of speed to keep your legs sharp. The goal is to arrive at the start line feeling fresh, not fried. Take those extra rest days, even if it feels strange to be riding less. Your body will thank you when you’re powering through mile 180.

Bike Checks

Your bike is your best friend on race day, so make sure it’s ready for the adventure. Give it a thorough once-over at least a week before the race. Check your tires for wear, make sure your chain is clean and lubed and test your brakes. If anything feels off, take it to your local bike shop sooner rather than later.

I also recommend putting on fresh bar tape, it’s a small touch that makes a big difference when you’re spending hours gripping the bars. Pack a small repair kit with a multi-tool, tire plugs, CO2 cartridges and a spare tube. Even if you’re running tubeless, a tube is your insurance policy for unexpected issues. Extra brake pads for heavy rain days.

Mental Prep

C2C isn’t just a physical challenge…it’s a mental one. There will be moments during the race when you’ll question everything. Why did I sign up for this? Why is the Pine River sand so relentless? Is Rob the photographer really hiding in a bush again, or is it a mirage? The key is to stay positive and break the race into smaller chunks. Focus on making it to the next aid station, the next climb or even the next turn.

Visualization helps. Picture yourself rolling across the finish line, exhausted but excited. Remember why you signed up in the first place…whether it’s to push your limits, enjoy the adventure or prove to yourself that you can. When the going gets tough, lean on those reasons to keep moving forward.

Race-Day Strategies

Pacing is everything. It’s so tempting to blast off with the fast group at the start, but remember…it’s a long day. Stick to a pace you know you can sustain for the distance. If you’re riding the 200-mile route, think of the first half as a warm-up and the second half as the real race. For the 100-mile riders, find a rhythm early and keep it steady.

Hydration and fueling are your secret weapons. Sip water and electrolytes consistently, and don’t let yourself go too long without eating. Even if you don’t feel hungry, your body needs the fuel. Take advantage of your support crew to restock, regroup and reset before heading back out.

My Pre-Race Rituals

Every year, my pre-race prep looks the same. The night before, I lay out all my gear (just like Iceman LOL) jersey, bibs, socks, shoes, gloves, helmet…so there’s no last-minute scramble in the morning. I pack my snacks, double-check my bike and make sure my crew knows the plan.

Race morning starts early, with coffee, bagel with cream cheese and a few deep breaths. I triple-check my hydration and snacks, roll up to the start line and soak in the energy. The buzz at the start of C2C is electric and even after all these years, it still gives me those awesome vibes of an amazing day ahead.
